How Low Does Your System Go?

Play 30, 40, 50, and 60 Hz test tones through your car and watch the waveform react. It's the quickest way to hear what your subs and box can really do.

Turn Your Volume Down First

These are pure low-frequency tones. At high volume they can damage speakers, subwoofers, and your hearing.

  • •Start at a low volume and turn it up slowly
  • •Stop right away if you hear distortion or rattling
  • •Phone and laptop speakers can't play these tones. Connect to your car.

How to Run the Test

  1. 1

    Connect to your system

Pair your phone to your car over Bluetooth or plug in an AUX cable. Your phone's own speaker can't play these frequencies.

  2. 2

    Set your EQ flat

Turn off bass boost, loudness, and any EQ presets so you hear what the system actually does.

  3. 3

    Start low

Set your car's volume low, play the 40 Hz tone, then raise it slowly.

  4. 4

    Try every tone

Step through 30, 40, 50, and 60 Hz and compare how each one sounds and feels.

What to Listen For

30 Hz is weak or missing

Many ported boxes are tuned higher than 30 Hz, and output drops off fast below the tuning. A box built for your sub can be tuned lower if you want that deep extension.

Rattles and buzzing

Usually trim panels, the license plate, or the box itself flexing. A braced box with a doubled baffle cuts down what comes from the enclosure.

Distortion or a harsh sound

Turn it down right away. That usually means the amp is clipping or the sub is past its limits.

One tone is way louder than the rest

That's a peak, often from box tuning or how your cabin shapes bass. A box matched to your vehicle helps smooth it out.

Download Test Tones

One-minute MP3s you can put on a USB drive or your phone and play through your system. Every tone fades in and out so there's no pop. Levels are digital (dBFS), not how loud it gets in your car.

0 dB tones are full scale. They're meant for setting amp gains with a multimeter or oscilloscope, not for listening. Start with -12 dB and work up.

Sweeps slowly glide from 20 to 80 Hz. They're the fastest way to find rattles, since every panel buzzes at a different frequency.
